John Nix

With a BS and MS in Horticultural Science from NC State University, John Nix brings passion and expertise to the field of plant breeding. He is currently a Research Specialist and plant breeder at the Mountain Crop Improvement Lab at NCSU. He has previously worked at the NC Arboretum and Longwood Gardens. As a Royal Horticulture Society and Garden Club of America Interchange Fellow, John spent a transformative year studying horticulture in the UK. This experience provided valuable insights, expanding his global perspective and deepening his connection with these botanical wonders. An engaging speaker, John seamlessly combines his scientific knowledge with a deep passion for plants.

Mountain Flora: In situ and In Potential
Many plants growing in the mountains of Western North Carolina have untapped potential for cultivation. This talk will explore both familiar species with unexplored garden potential and obscure flora that remain entirely underutilized. We’ll consider these plants in their natural habitats and the possibilities they hold.
